The UAE imports approximately 80 percent of its food, with some 33.7 million tons imported in 2016. This represents 351,761 total food shipments, up from 339,979 in 2015.

Major strides have been made in reducing the amount of damaged food imported. With strict government policies in place, damaged food has been lowered from 30,420 kilograms to 13,952 kilograms.

One major trend affecting the region is the price-consciousness of consumers, with value-based marketing strategies coming front and center. At the same time, healthier options are becoming more popular, with consumers highly sensitive to quality. Buyers are selecting more organic foods and items free from ingredients perceived as detrimental to health.
